Focus group changes
In today's lesson, Eboni and I spoke to Miss about our questions for this session and how we were going to structure it before we carried it out. After a discussion, we thought that it would be a good idea to focus the question more on the genre that we have now decided upon. We will now be more specific with the chosen question so that we can lead the students in the focus group to openly talk about their preferences.
In order to achieve this, we decided that we should change the structure of the focus group from just simple questions and answers. Instead, we will create a power point to showcase the questions so that we have put together whilst at the same time we can use examples so that the audience can engage with a text and then tell us what they like and don't like based on this. The Power point is a very useful idea as we can then transfer the success of it as well as the actual power point onto our blogs to state the questions that we asked as well as what we found from them.
We will introduce why we are doing this focus group and what it will consist of to the group as an introduction and then we will introduce a series of questions and videos to them.

RnB general conventions
Now that we have decided upon genre, I have researched the main conventions of RnB which I can challenge and conform to during our production of the video.
Character influence
The main factor in choosing RnB as the genre for our coursework was the fact that we know a performer who would be willing to participate in this sort of video. His name is Tavonga and he has already agreed to help us with the production and is the perfect character that we need for the video. This idea was always in our minds however, I still researched and analysed products from the Indie rock and the pop genre just in-case this option did not work out. We got in touch with Tavonga however, and he has agreed to perform for our video in order to help us put it together.
Tavonga is very experienced in the music industry and he has his own YouTube channel where he has uploaded videos of himself performing his own covers of songs for the public to see. We were aware of his talents and knew that he would be very helpful for our coursework if he was able to join us. Luckily, he confirmed that he was available and so RnB is our final choice for the music video that we will be creating.

Focus Group Ideas
To gain more of an idea about who our audience will be as well as their demands, as a group, we will conduct various focus groups for a range of ages to see what they think. The focus will consist of the follow 4 age groups:
6 Students from Year 10 (Age 14-15)
6 Students from Year 11 (Age 15-16)
6 Students from Year 12 (Age 16-17)
6 Students from Year 13 (Age 17-18)
6 family members (Age 25+)
Originally, our focus group was very generic as we were unsure of our target audience and so we were planning on doing the groups using: year 8 pupils, year 10 pupils and a sixth form group. Now that we have chosen RnB however, we concluded that RnB would not be appropriate to talk to year 8 pupils about and so we required an older audience who would be more likely to listen to this genre of music.
As the year 10's and some of the year 11's are still under the age of 16, we decided that we should not partake with them in the session before we had a letter of consent from their parents to take part. After discussing together, how to structure this short letter, Eboni wrote out the consent form to send away to the parents of the 6 year 10's and 6 year 12's pupils that we will be interacting with. In the meantime, we will conduct the focus groups with the sixth formers and the older audiences that we have to gather their ideas and preferences together, before we can continue with the younger audiences.

Genre Decision
In today's lesson, Beth, Eboni and myself came to a decision on the genre of music video and ancillary tasks that we will produce. We asked to go to a separate room to make this decision so that we could begin research on the genre in terms of audience profile and what we would need to include. Together, we discussed which genre from: Pop, Indie rock and RnB would be the most effective and realistic to create with the resources and connections that we have and came to the decision that RnB would be our final choice of genre.
We have chosen this genre because we are still in touch with a friend who studies music and would be willing to assist us with the production of the video. His favourite genre is RnB and we are aware of the qualities that he has to feature in our video whilst bringing knowledge to our production set up. There are now a range of research possibilities that we can look at to help plan ideas for the video that we will create. Pop was not chosen because we agreed that not many people would be willing to feature in this genre and we had the idea that it would be a little 'cringey' had we got the opportunity to create it. Indie rock was a good genre to research however, many of these videos are performance based and we would not have the people or equipment to put this together. With RnB however, the types of music video in this genre are varied and that can play to our strengths as we have a performer to provide the performance element if we need it.
